Being First Woman Speaker of Lok Sabha Meira Kumar Made History
Meira Kumar, Senior Congress leader took oath as India’s first woman speaker which not only made history in the Lok Sabha but also made legendary step in the feminism. After stunning win of Mamata Banerjee in West Bengal in the 15th Lok Sabha election, unanimous vote for Meira Kumar again proved that women are becoming more powerful day by day. Instead of being dominated by others they are going to dominate the country in the near future.
Meira is the daughter of former deputy Prime Minister Jagjivan Ram who hails from Dalit community. She was born in Patna in 1945. She is a law graduate and an M.A in English. She joined the Indian Foreign Service in 1973 and served at the embassies in Spain, United Kingdom and Mauritius. She was enlisted into the first Man Mohan Sing cabinet as Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment in 2004. After a resolution moved by UPA chair person Sonia Gandhi and seconded by Leader of the House Pranab Mukherjee she was offered the Speaker’s chair.
Prime Minister praised her discerned record of her diplomatic attitude, 25 years in Parliament, and her ministry. He also commended her grace, stronger personality and tact. Pranab Mukherjee also praised her qualities and dignity and assured that Kumar will keep continue the tradition of former Speaker’s impartiality, judiciousness and taking correct decisions at correct time.
Some are raising voice against her saying how she could be able to manage India’s fractious MPs with her low pitched tone. But according to cognitive scientists lower pitch is associated with stronger personality. Hence it can be expected that she could fortify herself by modulating her voice, expressions and body language. By the way Congress has created a stratagem by selecting a woman as a Speaker. And obviously this movement is a positive signal throughout the country.
